With the help of our volunteers, the Historic Wilmington Foundation preserves and protects the irreplaceable.

At this time, our greatest need for volunteers is with Legacy Architectural Salvage. Through Legacy, HWF rescues pre-1960s architectural elements (doors, wood, windows, shutters, and more!), furniture, and home décor, offering them for sale at reasonable prices. HWF puts the proceeds to work, furthering our mission and advocating for local preservation!

Here are three volunteer roles at Legacy:

  • Retail: Do you love interior design and creating beautiful spaces? You’ll get a kick out of staging retail items and organizing inventory at Legacy Architectural Salvage! New donations come in every day, and our volunteers keep the warehouse in tip top shape, showcasing our new salvaged treasures to shoppers. Volunteers also greet customers and complete transactions using our point of sale system.
  • Deconstruction: Though HWF’s goal is to preserve our built history in its original setting, it’s sometimes necessary to salvage our architectural heritage. For homes scheduled for demolition, Legacy is able to coordinate with the property owner to send in a team of deconstruction volunteers to save all they can: doors, windows, siding, flooring, and more. This role requires physical labor, and is ideal for people who like working with their hands, lifting heavy objects, and don’t mind getting a little bit dirty!
  • Woodshop: Love working with your hands? Help Legacy repair damaged donated items in the workshop—or, create repurposed items from salvaged materials! Experience with power tools is ideal, but not necessary.
