125th Celebration Brunswick and St. Philip’s Church
May 11, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
$30Event hosted by our friends in preservation the NSCDA-NC.
Please join us in celebrating the Society’s 125th Anniversary with the revival of a tradition that began in 1899 and lasted through the 40s. Completed in 1768, St. Philip’s Church and all of Old Brunswick were set on fire by the British in 1776. Only the brick walls of the church survived. Measuring three feet wide and rising as high as 24 feet, they stand as a testimony to our colonial past and the hard-fought struggle for independence. The ladies of the NSCDA-NC were determined that these walls should remain intact. To raise awareness of the historic structure’s significance, they organized annual pilgrimages attended by hundreds of Wilmington townsfolk, who traveled downriver to the site on a steamer ship. For the twenty-first century version of the pilgrimage, travel will be by car. PROGRAM: • Rt. Rev. Henry Parsley – History of St. Philip’s • Historian Jim McKee – History of Brunswick Town • Choir Performances & Sing-Alongs • Box Lunch by Spoonfed $30 per person Attire: Picnic festive |
